Chapter One – The Creation of Heaven and Earth

In the beginning, when heaven and earth were still in chaos, the gods Dong and Se arranged all things in the universe. Later, the benevolent deity Enyu Enman came into being. Enyu Enman laid nine pairs of white eggs, from which many gods emerged, including the Nine Brothers who opened the heavens and the Seven Sisters who shaped the earth.

The Nine Heaven-Opening Brothers erected celestial pillars in the five directions—east, south, west, north, and center—holding up the sky with their heads and steadying the earth with their feet. The Seven Earth-Shaping Sisters placed a golden stone at the gate of the earth, stabilizing it. From then on, the heavens no longer roared with thunder, and the earth no longer shook. Heaven and earth became clear and ordered.

From the egg of humankind, human beings were born and multiplied across generations, eventually leading to the heroic ancestor of the Naxi people—Chong Ren Li’en.

Chapter Two – The Great Flood

Chong Ren Lien and his brothers went to the fields to plow the land. Lien Kua Gu and Kua Ji overturned the plowshare, which struck the head of the East God, breaking his silver hat, hitting the hand of the Se God, and snapping Se God’s golden staff. Chong Ren Lien then instructed the two gods to perform cupping therapy as a treatment. Lien’s five brothers and Ju Ming’s six sisters were forbidden from marrying each other, but they formed marital couples anyway. This act defiled heaven and earth, the sun, moon, stars, and villages, causing darkness and gloom; the sun and moon lost their light, and floods surged wildly. Guided by the East God and Se God, Chong Ren Lien hid inside a yak-hide bag and survived. The lonely Chong Ren Lien then met the heavenly goddess Shen Hong Bao Bai; they fell in love and went together to heaven.

Chapter Three – Seeking the Heavenly Maiden

The sky god Zilao Apu set up a series of difficult tasks: cutting down the forests of ninety-nine mountains in one day, burning all the trees on ninety-nine mountains in one day, sowing seeds across ninety-nine mountains in one day, collecting ninety-nine seed grains scattered across the mountain lands, retrieving seeds eaten by doves and ants, hunting mountain goats, fishing in rivers, shooting doves with a bow and arrow, making clothes from tiger skin, and going to the tiger’s den to milk a tiger… With the help of Chen Hong Bao Bai, Lien successfully passed all these trials related to slash-and-burn farming and hunting imposed by the sky god. In the end, Zilao Apu gave his daughter in marriage to Lien.

Chapter Four – Migration to the Human World

Chongren Lien and Chenhong Baobai, carrying various grain seeds, Dongba priests, and bowls made of gold, silver, jade, and stone, along with herds of livestock as dowry, migrated from the heavenly realm to the human world after enduring many hardships. They had three sons who initially could not speak. After receiving guidance from the gods and performing a sky worship ceremony, they began to speak. The eldest son spoke Tibetan, the second spoke Naxi, and the youngest spoke Bai. Their descendants became these three ethnic groups, living side by side in harmony, flourishing with prosperous and happy lives.
